Art apps are tools for our hands and minds.Īnd even if you have the best tools, they themselves do not have the knowledge to execute an idea or do it well. They require human input by having us use our fingers, mouses, and styluses to lay down the pixelated paint strokes, choose the colours, actively make the choice to use blending modes and a gazillion other choices. can’t generate images by themselves or (what AI art generators essentially do) by recycling and blending elements of pre-existing images. Unlike AI art (which is a beehive I will NOT be touching here at least not today), art apps like Photoshop, Procreate, Sketchbook, Krita, Clip Studio Paint etc. I think the danger comes when people think the brushes or the tools will compensate for what’s not there, which I think is the mindset people used to (and the vocal minority might still have) about digital art: that digital art isn’t “real” art because the computer does all the work. ![]() So, outside of blending modes, the brushes I typically use aren’t anything too special. If we’re including erasers (not just turning on the transparent mode on the painting brushes), then my total is actually 7: I use a hard eraser and a soft eraser. Basically, I usually use a hard round brush, two textured brushes, and two different airbrushes. Out of the 25 brushes I have between my usual two brush sets, I typically use 5 of those brushes. I’ve experimented with all the sets and found that I tend to bounce between two sets of brushes. But even then, it’s unlikely that you’ll use every single default brush, and often.įor example, I use Autodesk Sketchbook and it automatically came with 16 different default brush packs, each with 5 to 18 brushes and tools (erasers, blenders). You can get by with the standard or default brushes that come with your apps when you download them. What’s the benefit? It helps to save time when it comes to painting certain details, like books on a shelf or braids.Īre they necessary? No, not at all. Many apps, such as the aforementioned apps and others like Clip Studio Paint allow you to download brush packs, usually custom-made by other users. Procreate and Photoshop allows you to create custom brushes. But in digital art applications, does it matter how fancy the tools are? ![]()
